Building A Mystery

Welcome to a new week, Copious Notes readers! I hope everyone who had off enjoyed their free day and had some good BBQ.

Now that we’re getting back into the swing of the week, I’d like to follow up to my inital post / first poll for the interactive story. First, thank you to those of you who did vote. While I had hoped for more input, some is way better than none. I am appreciative to those who posted what type of story this should be. Beating out science fiction by 2-1, we’ll be embarking on a mystery.

Now let me say that I’ve never written a mystery before and I don’t know how well I will do, but I think that because this will be an interactive venture, input from you will greatly help and in the end this could be a good story. I know that mysteries are normally exciting and also they are not limited to a ‘who-dun-it’. The recent success of Dan Brown shows that puzzle-mysteries can resonate with readers out there. I am also a history fan and believe that a history-driven, puzzle-style story could work well and it can also be a book that I would be excited to write. While that may sound selfish, I will say that enthusiasm to write a story equals the drive to write it. Given the fact that I haven’t written a single word in almost a month and a half, this experiment should work well.

So for this second round of input, please comment and let me know if you agree that this is the type of mystery that should be written. If you have a better suggestion, please feel free to let me know!

The Interactive Story

As I announced last week, I am going to begin writing an interactive story with you, the readers of Copious Notes. This book is to be an experiment in seeing how a story can be crafted when multiple people are involved. As each chapter or section is posted, comments, edits, suggestions and all input will help shape the rest of the book. Eventually, it will be a complete work that will be posted here for all to read.

We need to get some of the ground-work in place so I know where to begin. In order to do that, I will post a series of polls to get everyone’s input. The first important item is the genre. This is where I leave it your hands. I will say that I am a sci-fi guy so that is an easier genre for me to write, but I’m open to writing something else. Please vote by posting your vote in the comments and if you have a suggestion then feel free to let me know. I will leave this poll open until Thursday, so be sure to get your vote in by then!

What genre should the book be?

-Sci-Fi
-Mystery
-Drama
-Other

And Now Something New

Lately I have been trying to figure out how to get more consistent content onto Copious Notes. My work schedule, combined with my after-work activities, make free time difficult sometimes. I *still* have not written anything new and I belive my writing drought stands at 4 weeks. Well now I’m looking to change that.

Since my last experiement I have seen that it didn’t really make a difference. I have had an idea floating around in my head for some time to do something I think would be original.

I plan on writing a story here on this blog and bringing you into the writing process. This will be a fully transparent story, where you will be able to see the entire creation happen from start to finish. As I write each chapter, I will post it along with requests for feedback and ideas on where to go next.

I would like this story to be as interactive as possible, meaning you can help dictate the final shape of the story. In the coming days I will post polls asking for you to pick the genre, plot, charactar names and other integral parts of the story.

This is literally a blank slate, as I do not have a story idea ready to go. This will be out in the open from start to finish. I’d love to know what everyone thinks about this and if you have any ideas, go ahead and post them in the comments. I’m eager to know your thoughts.
